RESUMO

The presence of coupling heterogeneity is deemed to be a natural attribute in realistic systems comprised of many interacting agents. In this work, we study dynamics of the 3D Kuramoto model with heterogeneous couplings, where the strength of coupling for each agent is weighted by its intrinsic rotation frequency. The critical coupling strength for the instability of incoherence is rigorously derived to be zero by carrying out a linear stability analysis of an incoherent state. For positive values of the coupling strength, at which the incoherence turns out to be unstable, a self-consistency approach is developed to theoretically predict the degree of global coherence of the model. Our theoretical analyses match well with numerical simulations, which helps us to deepen the understanding of collective behaviors spontaneously emerged in heterogeneously coupled high-dimensional dynamical networks.

Hyperactivation of the NLRP3 inflammasome has been implicated in the pathogenesis of numerous diseases. However, the precise molecular mechanisms that modulate the transcriptional regulation of NLRP3 remain largely unknown. In this study, we demonstrated that S-nitrosoglutathione reductase (GSNOR) deficiency in macrophages leads to significant increases in the Nlrp3 and Il-1ß expression levels and interleukin-1ß (IL-1ß) secretion in response to NLRP3 inflammasome stimulation. Furthermore, in vivo experiments utilizing Gsnor-/- mice revealed increased disease severity in both lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced septic shock and dextran sodium sulfate (DSS)-induced colitis models. Additionally, we showed that both LPS-induced septic shock and DSS-induced colitis were ameliorated in Gsnor-/- Nlrp3-/- double-knockout (DKO) mice. Mechanistically, GSNOR deficiency increases the S-nitrosation of mitogen-activated protein kinase 14 (MAPK14) at the Cys211 residue and augments MAPK14 kinase activity, thereby promoting Nlrp3 and Il-1ß transcription and stimulating NLRP3 inflammasome activity. Our findings suggested that GSNOR is a regulator of the NLRP3 inflammasome and that reducing the level of S-nitrosylated MAPK14 may constitute an effective strategy for alleviating diseases associated with NLRP3-mediated inflammation.

BACKGROUND: Cyclotron-based proton therapy systems utilize the highest proton energies to achieve an ultra-high dose rate (UHDR) for FLASH radiotherapy. The deep-penetrating range associated with this high energy can be modulated by inserting a uniform plate of proton-stopping material, known as a range shifter, in the beam path at the nozzle to bring the Bragg peak within the target while ensuring high proton transport efficiency for UHDR. Aluminum has been recently proposed as a range shifter material mainly due to its high compactness and its mechanical properties. A possible drawback lies in the fact that aluminum has a larger cross-section of producing secondary neutrons compared to conventional plastic range shifters. Accordingly, an increase in secondary neutron contamination was expected during the delivery of range-modulated FLASH proton therapy, potentially heightening neutron-induced carcinogenic risks to the patient. PURPOSE: We conducted neutron dosimetry using simulations and measurements to evaluate excess dose due to neutron exposure during UHDR proton irradiation with aluminum range shifters compared to plastic range shifters. METHODS: Monte Carlo simulations in TOPAS were performed to investigate the secondary neutron production characteristics with aluminum range shifter during 225 MeV single-spot proton irradiation. The computational results were validated against measurements with a pair of ionization chambers in an out-of-field region ( ≤ $\le$ 30 cm) and with a Proton Recoil Scintillator-Los Alamos rem meter in a far-out-of-field region (0.5-2.5 m). The assessments were repeated with solid water slabs as a surrogate for the conventional range shifter material to evaluate the impact of aluminum on neutron yield. The results were compared with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standards to evaluate the clinical acceptance of the secondary neutron yield. RESULTS: For a range modulation up to 26 cm in water, the maximum simulated and measured values of out-of-field secondary neutron dose equivalent per therapeutic dose with aluminum range shifter were found to be ( 0.57 ± 0.02 ) mSv/Gy $(0.57\pm 0.02)\ \text{mSv/Gy}$ and ( 0.46 ± 0.04 ) mSv/Gy $(0.46\pm 0.04)\ \text{mSv/Gy}$ , respectively, overall higher than the solid water cases (simulation: ( 0.332 ± 0.003 ) mSv/Gy $(0.332\pm 0.003)\ \text{mSv/Gy}$ ; measurement: ( 0.33 ± 0.03 ) mSv/Gy $(0.33\pm 0.03)\ \text{mSv/Gy}$ ). The maximum far out-of-field secondary neutron dose equivalent was found to be ( 8.8 ± 0.5 $8.8 \pm 0.5$ )  µ Sv / Gy $\umu {\rm Sv/Gy}$ and ( 1.62 ± 0.02 $1.62 \pm 0.02$ )  µ Sv / Gy $\umu {\rm Sv/Gy}$ for the simulations and rem meter measurements, respectively, also higher than the solid water counterparts (simulation: ( 3.3 ± 0.3 $3.3 \pm 0.3$ )  µ Sv / Gy $\umu {\rm Sv/Gy}$ ; measurement: ( 0.63 ± 0.03 $0.63 \pm 0.03$ )  µ Sv / Gy $\umu {\rm Sv/Gy}$ ). CONCLUSIONS: We conducted simulations and measurements of secondary neutron production under proton irradiation at FLASH energy with range shifters. We found that the secondary neutron yield increased when using aluminum range shifters compared to conventional materials while remaining well below the non-primary radiation limit constrained by the IEC regulations.

Background: Mild depression is not just a mental disease, but also a serious and long-term public health issue. It affects the quality of life of patients and can quickly develop into major depression. There are currently no effective drug treatments with high efficacy and few adverse reactions. Acupuncture may be an alternative treatment option. Preliminary experiments and practices have demonstrated that "Tiaoshen" acupuncture improves symptoms in patients who have depression, however the underlying data and method remain unclear at present. Methods: This is a prospective, single-center, single-blind, randomized controlled trial. We plan to recruit 70 participants and randomly assign them to receive "Tiaoshen" acupuncture or traditional acupuncture at a ratio of 1:1. Then, all the participants will receive the appropriate acupuncture treatment for four weeks. The results of the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDSR-24) will serve as the primary outcome, while the results of the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) and the World Health Organization Quality of Life Brief Version (WHOQOL-BREF) will serve as secondary outcomes. Evaluations will be conducted at baseline, 1, 2, and 4 weeks after treatment initiation, and 1 and 3 months after treatment completion. The safety of the intervention will be evaluated every week using the Columbia-Suicide Severity Rating Scale (C-SSRS) and the Treatment Emergent Symptoms Scale (TESS). Serum levels of oxidative stress markers 8-iso-prostaglandin F2α (8-iso-PGF2α), superoxide dismutase (SOD), uric acid (UA), and total bilirubin (TBIL) will be measured at baseline and the end of the treatment. We will conduct a statistical analysis of intention to treat (ITT) and conformance to protocol set (PPS) data. Discussion: This research aims to provide high-quality evidence for the efficacy and safety of "Tiaoshen" acupuncture as a treatment for mild depression. In addition, the mechanism through which acupuncture heals mild depression will be investigated.

With the aging of the population, the health of the elderly has become increasingly important. Postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) is a common neurological complication in elderly patients following general anesthesia or surgery. It is characterized by cognitive decline that may persist for weeks, months, or even longer. Electroacupuncture (EA), a novel therapy that combines physical nerve stimulation with acupuncture treatment from traditional Chinese medicine, holds potential as a therapeutic intervention for preventing and treating POCD, particularly in elderly patients. Although the beneficial effects of EA on POCD have been explored in preclinical and clinical studies, the reliability of EA is limited by methodological shortcomings, and the underlying mechanisms remain largely unexplored. Therefore, we have synthesized existing evidence and proposed potential biological mechanisms underlying the effects of EA on neuroinflammation, oxidative stress, autophagy, the microbiota-gut-brain axis, and epigenetic modification. This review summarizes recent advances in EA and POCD, provides a theoretical foundation, explores potential molecular mechanisms for the prevention and treatment of POCD, and offers a basis for conducting relevant clinical trials.

In this study, we conducted an extensive investigation into broadband near-infrared luminescence of Cr3+-doped Ca3Y2Ge3O12 garnet, employing first-principles calculations within the density functional theory framework. Our initial focus involved determining the site occupancy of Cr3+ activator ions, which revealed a pronounced preference for the Y3+ sites over the Ca2+ and Ge4+ sites, as evidenced by the formation energy calculations. Subsequently, the geometric structures of the excited states 2E and 4T2, along with their optical transition energies relative to the ground state 4A2 in Ca3Y2Ge3O12:Cr3+, were successfully modeled using the ΔSCF method. Calculation convergence challenges were effectively addressed through the proposed fractional particle occupancy schemes. The constructed host-referred binding energy diagram provided a clear description of the luminescence kinetics process in the garnet, which explained the high quantum efficiency of emission. Furthermore, the accurate prediction of thermal excitation energy yielded insights into the thermal stability of the compound, as illustrated in the calculated configuration coordinate diagram. More importantly, all calculated data were consistently aligned with the experimental results. This research not only advances our understanding of the intricate interplay between geometric and electronic structures, optical properties, and thermal behavior in Cr3+-doped garnets but also lays the groundwork for future breakthroughs in the high-throughput design and optimization of luminescent performance and thermal stability in Cr3+-doped phosphors.

Zika virus (ZIKV) and Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) are antigenically related flaviviruses that co-circulate in many countries/territories. The interaction between the two viruses needs to be determined. Recent findings by ourselves and other labs showed that JEV-elicited antibodies (Abs) and CD8+ T cells exacerbate and protect against subsequent ZIKV infection, respectively. However, the impact of JEV envelope (E) protein domain III (EDIII)-induced immune responses on ZIKV infection is unclear. We show here that sera from JEV-EDIII-vaccinated mice cross-react with ZIKV-EDIII in vitro, and transfer of the same sera to mice significantly decreases death upon lethal ZIKV infection at a dose-dependent manner. Maternally acquired anti-JEV-EDIII Abs also significantly reduce the mortality of neonatal mice born to JEV-EDIII-immune mothers post ZIKV challenge. Similarly, transfer of ZIKV-EDIII-reactive IgG purified from JEV-vaccinated humans increases the survival of ZIKV-infected mice. Notably, transfer of an extremely low volume of JEV-EDIII-immune sera or ZIKV-EDIII-reactive IgG does not mediate the Ab-mediated enhancement (ADE) of ZIKV infection. Similarly, transfer of JEV-EDIII-elicited CD8+ T cells protects recipient mice against ZIKV challenge. These results demonstrate that JEV-EDIII-induced immune components including Abs and T cells have protective roles in ZIKV infection, suggesting EDIII is a promising immunogen for developing effective and safety JEV vaccine.

Nitrogen (N) concentrations in many lakes have decreased substantially in recent years due to external load reduction to mitigate harmful algal blooms. However, little attention has been paid to the linkage between the lakes' nitrogen removal efficiency and improved water quality in lakes, especially the variation of denitrification rate (DNR) under decreasing N concentrations. To understand the efficiency of N removal under improving water quality and its influence on the N control targets in Lake Taihu, a denitrification model based on in situ experimental results was developed and long-term (from 2007 to 2022) water quality and meteorological observations were used to estimate DNR and relate it to the amount of N removal (ANR) from the lake. The concentration of total nitrogen (TN) in Lake Taihu decreased from 3.28 mg L-1 to 1.41 mg L-1 from 2007 to 2022 but the reduction showed spatial heterogeneity. The annual mean DNR decreased from 45.6 µmol m-2 h-1 to 4.2 µmol m-2 h-1, and ANR decreased from 11.85×103 t yr-1 to 1.17×103 t yr-1 during the study years. N budget analysis suggested that the amount of N removed by denitrification accounted for 23.3 % of the external load in 2007, but decreased to only 4.0 % in 2022. Thus, the contribution of N removal by internal N cycling decreased significantly as water quality improved. Notably, the proportion of ANR in winter to total ANR increased from 14 % in 2007 to 23 % in 2022 due to warming. This could potentially lead to N deficiencies in spring and summer, thus limiting the availability of N to phytoplankton. A TN concentration of less than 1.0 mg L-1 in the lake and 1.5 mg L-1 in the inflowing lake zones in spring contribute to local N-limitation in Lake Taihu for cyanobacteria control. Our study revealed a general pattern that N removal efficiency decreases with improved water quality, which is instructive for eutrophic lakes in nitrogen management.

The tremendous application potentiality of transitional metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), such as molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) nanosheets, will unavoidably lead to increasing release into the environment, which could influence the fate and toxicity of co-existed contaminants. The present study discovered that 59.8 % of trivalent antimony [Sb(III)] was transformed by MoS2 to pentavalent Sb [Sb(V)] in aqueous solutions under light illumination, which was due to hole oxidation on the nanosheet surfaces. A synergistic toxicity between MoS2 and Sb(III, V) to algae (Chlorella vulgaris) was observed, as demonstrated by the lower median-effect concentrations of MoS2 + Sb(III)/Sb(V) (13.1 and 20.9 mg/L, respectively) than Sb(III)/Sb(V) (38.8 and 92.5 mg/L, respectively) alone. Particularly, MoS2 at noncytotoxic doses notably increased the bioaccumulation of Sb(III, V) in algae, causing aggravated oxidative damage, photosynthetic inhibition, and structural alterations. Metabolomics indicated that oxidative stress and membrane permeabilization were primarily associated with down-regulated amino acids involved in glutathione biosynthesis and unsaturated fatty acids. MoS2 co-exposure remarkably decreased the levels of thiol antidotes (glutathione and phytochelatins) and aggravated the inhibition on energy metabolism and ATP synthesis, compromising the Sb(III, V) detoxification and efflux. Additionally, extracellular P was captured by the nanosheets, also contributing to the uptake of Sb(V). Our findings emphasized the nonignorability of TMDs even at environmental levels in affecting the ecological hazard of metalloids, providing insight into comprehensive safety assessment of TMDs.

RESUMO

Compared to either HIV or hepatitis B virus (HBV) monoinfected individuals, HIV/HBV-coinfected individuals have a decreased probability of spontaneous HBV clearance and a greater risk of developing chronic liver damage and a faster progression to cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. This manuscript attempts to provide a comprehensive review of the landscape of current HIV/HBV coinfection research with a focus on the intricate interactions between these two viruses. Our review will help understand the disease dynamics of HIV/HBV coinfection and has important implications for designing public health strategies.

Cell division cycle 42 (CDC42) regulates podocyte apoptosis to take part in the development and progression of diabetic nephropathy (DN), but currently the clinical evidence is limited. The aim of the present study was to investigate the capability of serum CDC42 expression level to estimate the development and progression of DN in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM). Patients with type 2 DM (n=306) were enrolled and divided into normoalbuminuria (n=185), microalbuminuria (n=72) and macroalbuminuria (n=49) groups based on the urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio. Serum CDC42 was measured in all subjects using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The median (interquartile range) CDC42 in patients with DM was 0.461 (0.314-0.690) ng/ml (range, 0.087-1.728 ng/ml). CDC42 was positively associated with the estimated glomerular filtration rate (P<0.001), but negatively correlated with body mass index, systolic blood pressure, hemoglobin A1c, serum creatine, serum uric acid and C reactive protein (all P<0.050). CDC42 levels were lowest in the macroalbuminuria group, followed by the microalbuminuria group, and were highest in the normoalbuminuria group (P<0.001). CDC42 indicated that it was a favorable estimator for the presence of albuminuria [area under the curve (AUC), 0.792; 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.736-0.848] and macroalbuminuria (AUC, 0.845; 95% CI, 0.775-0.915). By analyses in four different multivariate logistic regression models, increased CDC42 was independently associated with the presence of microalbuminuria (all P<0.001), macroalbuminuria (most P<0.001) and microalbuminuria + macroalbuminuria (all P<0.001). Serum CDC42 level negatively correlated with microalbuminuria and macroalbuminuria in patients with DM, suggesting its ability for estimating the development and progression of DN.

Cancer immunotherapy has transformed the clinical approach to patients with malignancies, as profound benefits can be seen in a subset of patients. To identify this subset, biomarker analyses increasingly focus on phenotypic and functional evaluation of the tumor microenvironment to determine if density, spatial distribution, and cellular composition of immune cell infiltrates can provide prognostic and/or predictive information. Attempts have been made to develop standardized methods to evaluate immune infiltrates in the routine assessment of certain tumor types; however, broad adoption of this approach in clinical decision-making is still missing. We developed approaches to categorize solid tumors into 'desert', 'excluded', and 'inflamed' types according to the spatial distribution of CD8+ immune effector cells to determine the prognostic and/or predictive implications of such labels. To overcome the limitations of this subjective approach, we incrementally developed four automated analysis pipelines of increasing granularity and complexity for density and pattern assessment of immune effector cells. We show that categorization based on 'manual' observation is predictive for clinical benefit from anti-programmed death ligand 1 therapy in two large cohorts of patients with non-small cell lung cancer or triple-negative breast cancer. For the automated analysis we demonstrate that a combined approach outperforms individual pipelines and successfully relates spatial features to pathologist-based readouts and the patient's response to therapy. Our findings suggest that tumor immunophenotype generated by automated analysis pipelines should be evaluated further as potential predictive biomarkers for cancer immunotherapy. © 2024 The Pathological Society of Great Britain and Ireland.

Intracerebral hemorrhagic stroke, characterized by acute hemorrhage in the brain, has a significant clinical prevalence and poses a substantial threat to individuals' well-being and productivity. Recent research has elucidated the role of gut microorganisms and their metabolites in influencing brain function through the microbiota-gut-brain axis (MGBA). This article provides a comprehensive review of the current literature on the common metabolites, short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) and trimethylamine-N-oxide (TMAO), produced by gut microbiota. These metabolites have demonstrated the potential to traverse the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and directly impact brain tissue. Additionally, these compounds have the potential to modulate the parasympathetic nervous system, thereby facilitating the release of pertinent substances, impeding the buildup of inflammatory agents within the brain, and manifesting anti-inflammatory properties. Furthermore, this scholarly analysis delves into the existing dearth of investigations concerning the influence of gut microorganisms and their metabolites on cerebral functions, while also highlighting prospective avenues for future research.

Corticosterone (CORT) damages hippocampal neurons as well as induces neuroinflammation. The tricarboxylic acid cycle metabolite itaconate has an anti-inflammatory role. Necroptosis is a form of programmed cell death, also known as inflammatory cell death. Menin is a multifunctional scaffold protein, which deficiency aggravates neuroinflammation. In this study, we explored whether itaconate inhibits CORT-induced neuroinflammation as well as necroptosis and further investigated the mediatory role of Menin in this protective effect of itaconate by using an exposure of CORT to HT22 cells (a hippocampal neuronal cell line). The viability of HT22 cells was examined by the cell counting kit 8 (CCK-8). The morphology of HT22 cells was observed by transmission electron microscope (TEM). The expressions of necroptosis-related proteins (p-RIP1/RIP1, p-RIP3/RIP3, and p-MLKL/MLKL) were evaluated by western blotting. The contents of inflammatory factors were detected by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kit. Our results showed that CORT increases the contents of pro-inflammatory factors (IL-1ß, TNF-α) as well as decreases the contents of anti-inflammatory factors (IL-4, IL-10) in HT22 cells. We also found that CORT increases the expressions of necroptosis-related proteins (p-RIP1/RIP1, p-RIP3/RIP3, and p-MLKL/MLKL) and decreases the cell viability in HT22 cells, indicating that CORT induces necroptosis in HT22 cells. Itaconate improves CORT-induced neuroinflammation and necroptosis. Furthermore, itaconate upregulates the expression of Menin in CORT-exposed HT22 cells. Importantly, silencing Menin abolishes the antagonistic effect of itaconate on CORT-induced necroptosis and neuroinflammation. In brief, these results indicated that itaconate protects HT22 cells against CORT-induced neuroinflammation and necroptosis via upregulating Menin.

BACKGROUND: Spastic paralysis is one of the most common sequelae of stroke, severely affecting patients' limb function and reducing their quality of life. Scalp acupuncture (SA) has been shown to significantly improve cerebral blood supply and reduce the severity of limb spasticity. This meta-analysis aims to systematically evaluate the clinical efficacy of SA in the treatment of post-stroke spastic paralysis, providing evidence-based medicine for clinical management of this condition. METHODS: We comprehensively searched databases including China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wanfang Data, VIP Chinese Science and Technology Periodical Database, China Biomedical Literature Database, PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library. Randomized controlled trials investigating the efficacy of SA in post-stroke spastic paralysis were identified until July 28, 2023. Meta-analysis was conducted using RevMan 5.4 and Stata17.0. RESULTS: A total of 16 studies were included. Meta-analysis showed that the modified Ashworth spasticity assessment scale in the SA group was significantly higher than that in the rehabilitation group (mean difference [MD] = -0.56, 95% confidence interval [CI] [-0.75, -0.37], Z = 5.67, P < .00001). The simplified Fugl-Meyer motor function assessment scale in the SA group was significantly higher than that in the rehabilitation group (MD = 5.86, 95% CI [3.26, 8.46], Z = 4.41, P < .0001). The modified Barthel index assessment scale in the SA group was significantly higher than that in the rehabilitation group (MD = 5.79, 95% CI [4.73, 6.84], Z = 10.77, P < .00001). Additionally, the clinical effective rate in the SA group was significantly higher than that in the rehabilitation group (relative risk = 1.25, 95% CI [1.16, 1.36], Z = 5.42, P < .00001). CONCLUSION: SA combined with rehabilitation therapy has certain advantages in reducing limb spasticity, improving limb function, and enhancing activities of daily living in patients with post-stroke spastic paralysis. Monitoring ecological resource change in mountainous and hilly areas (MHAs) is vital for theoretical and practical advancements of ecological resource utilization and management in complex ecosystems. The factors driving structural and functional changes in green eco-spaces (GES) in these areas are complex and uncertain, with notable spatial scale effects. However, analyzing the multi-scale driving mechanisms of ecological and socioeconomic factors at a fine spatiotemporal scale presents significant challenges. To address these challenges, we analyzed dynamic changes in GES and eco-socio-economic development in Shanghang County, a typical mountainous region in southern China. We used multiple linear regression and multi-scale geographically weighted regression model to identify key factors driving GES changes and their multi-scale effects at both global and local levels. Over the past two decades, the GES area in the study area has exhibited a consistent pattern of decline, characterized by phases of gradual decline (2000-2005), sharp decline (2005-2009), slow decline (2009-2019). Key global factors driving GES changes included elevation (ELE), slope (SLOPE), population density (PD), distance to settlements (SETTLE), and distance to administrative centers (ADMIN). These factors exhibited significant spatial heterogeneity and multi-scale effects on GES changes. Specifically, SETTLE, PD, SLOPE, and ELE consistently drove GES changes at the local level, while ADMIN only showed significant localized effects during 2005-2009. The synergy between SETTLE and SLOPE had a considerable impact on GES changes, increasing over time, whereas ELE and PD demonstrated a consistent trade-off effect. These findings provide detailed spatiotemporal insights into the driving mechanisms of natural ecological resources, offering crucial guidance for environmental management, land source management, regional economic development, and biodiversity conservation in Shanghang and analogous subtropical hilly regions worldwide.

Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) manifests precipitously and profoundly impairs the neurological function in patients who are affected. The etiology of subsequent injury post-ICH is multifaceted, characterized by the intricate interplay of various factors, rendering therapeutic interventions challenging. Astrocytes, a distinct class of glial cells, interact with neurons and microglia, and are implicated in a series of pathophysiological alterations following ICH. A comprehensive examination of the functions and mechanisms associated with astrocytic proteins may shed light on the role of astrocytes in ICH pathology and proffer innovative therapeutic avenues for ICH management.

During the early outbreak phase of COVID-19 in China, lockdowns prevailed as the only available policy tools to mitigate the spread of infection. To evaluate the impact of lockdown policies in the context of the first phase of COVID-19 pandemic, we leverage data on daily confirmed cases per million people and related characteristics of a large set of cities. The study analyzed 369 Chinese cities, among which 188 implemented lockdowns of varying severity levels from January 23 to March 31, 2020. We use nationwide Baidu Mobility data to estimate the impact of lockdown policies on mitigating COVID-19 cases through reducing human mobility. We adopt a heterogeneous treatment effect model to quantify the effect of lockdown policies on containing confirmed case counts. Our results suggest that lockdowns substantially reduced human mobility, and larger reduction in mobility occurred within-city compared to between-city. The COVID-19 daily confirmed cases per million people decreased by 9% - 9.2% for every ten-percentage point fall in within-city travel intensity in t+7 timeframe. We also find that one city's lockdowns can effectively reduce the spillover cases of the traveler's destination cities. We find no evidence that stricter lockdowns are more effective at mitigating COVID-19 risks. Our findings provide practical insights about the effectiveness of NPI during the early outbreak phase of the unprecedented pandemic.

In biological or physical systems, the intrinsic properties of oscillators are heterogeneous and correlated. These two characteristics have been empirically validated and have garnered attention in theoretical studies. In this paper, we propose a power-law function existed between the dynamical parameters of the coupled oscillators, which can control discontinuous phase transition switching. Unlike the special designs for the coupling terms, this generalized function within the dynamical term reveals another path for generating the first-order phase transitions. The power-law relationship between dynamic characteristics is reasonable, as observed in empirical studies, such as long-term tremor activity during volcanic eruptions and ion channel characteristics of the Xenopus expression system. Our work expands the conditions that used to be strict for the occurrence of the first-order phase transitions and deepens our understanding of the impact of correlation between intrinsic parameters on phase transitions. We explain the reason why the continuous phase transition switches to the discontinuous phase transition when the control parameter is at a critical value.

BACKGROUND: Secondary immunodeficiency can arise from various clinical conditions that include HIV infection, chronic diseases, malignancy and long-term use of immunosuppressives, which makes the suffering patients susceptible to all types of pathogenic infections. Other than HIV infection, the possible pathogen profiles in other aetiology-induced secondary immunodeficiency are largely unknown. METHODS: Medical records of the patients with secondary immunodeficiency caused by various aetiologies were collected from the First Affiliated Hospital of Nanchang University, China. Based on these records, models were developed with the machine learning method to predict the potential infectious pathogens that may inflict the patients with secondary immunodeficiency caused by various disease conditions other than HIV infection. RESULTS: Several metrics were used to evaluate the models' performance. A consistent conclusion can be drawn from all the metrics that Gradient Boosting Machine had the best performance with the highest accuracy at 91.01%, exceeding other models by 13.48, 7.14, and 4.49% respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The models developed in our study enable the prediction of potential infectious pathogens that may affect the patients with secondary immunodeficiency caused by various aetiologies except for HIV infection, which will help clinicians make a timely decision on antibiotic use before microorganism culture results return.
